Why look for a pattern for something that simple. Measure her cellphone all the way around its middle. Divide that in half. Check your yarn wrapper for the guage, and see how many stitches you'll need to make that many inches. Then add 2 stitches. Cast on that many. (Example: If her phone is 4'; around, you want to knit a piece 2'; wide. If you get 5 stitches per inch, you'd cast on 10 + 2, or 12.)

Garter stitch is best for this. When you have about 2.5 times the length of her phone, cast off. Measure the length of your piece and divide that into 5ths. Put little pins in at these spots. At the 2/5 pin, fold the piece up. It should reach the 4/5 pin, if you measured correctly. Sew up your side seams. You have a phone case with a flap. Finish it off any way you like.
There are several free patterns out there. The link below has a free cell phone case as well as various others such as Ipod, Laptops, Water Bottles, just about anything you can think off. You can also so to Lionbrand.com and Ravelry.com for their free patterns but you will need to join their websites. It's free and I highly recommend both.
Here is one for you.

You are a good friend.
Use a small sock like everyone else - look for socks that have been knitted and give her one, don't tell her you didn't make it.
